Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max was the speed king among U.S. smartphones in the fourth quarter. That’s according to Ookla’s latest Speedtest Intelligence test.

The 2023 iPhone model clocked median download speeds of 213.84Mbps. That’s a significant lead over the second-place iPhone 15 Pro, which managed 189.33Mbps.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 wasn’t far behind, with a median download speed of 184.69Mbps. The Galaxy S23 Ultra and the iPhone 15 trailed at 181.04Mbps and 172.12Mbps, respectively.

Upload speeds? The iPhone 15 Pro Max led there too, with a median speed of 14.70Mbps. The iPhone 15 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra followed with speeds of 12.90Mbps and 13.88Mbps. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the iPhone 15 lagged slightly at 12.41Mbps and 12.15Mbps.

Latency scores were a different story. The Galaxy S23 Ultra took the crown with 52 ms, and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 was a close second at 53 ms. The iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro both clocked in at 54 ms. The iPhone 15 was the slowest of the bunch, with a latency of 55 ms.

Ookla’s report noted that there was no clear winner between Apple and Samsung. Samsung did edge out Apple in median download speed (113.74Mbps), median upload speed (10.51Mbps), and latency (54 ms). Apple’s scores were 103.74Mbps, 9.20Mbps, and 58 ms, respectively.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 5G was the fastest modem chip in Q4. It’s found in the iPhone 15 series, Galaxy S23 series, and other phones. The chip boasted a median download speed of 205.38Mbps and a median upload speed of 14.10Mbps. That’s a significant improvement over its predecessor, the Snapdragon X65 5G.

Among application processors (AP), the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 led the pack. It had a median download speed of 173.55Mbps and a median upload speed of 13.13Mbps. The previous generation, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ AP, was slightly slower, with download and upload speeds of 169.27Mbps and 11.95Mbps.
