Full Story

Google’s got some news. They’re adding a bunch of new features to their Google Home app. One of the big ones? Expanded support for the first-generation Nest Cam Outdoor. But that’s not all – there’s also the ability to create custom clips and a new AI-powered garage door detection feature.

These goodies are first going to show up for users who’ve signed up for the Public Preview of the Google Home app. But don’t worry, they’ll be available to all users in the coming weeks. Just a heads up though, some of these features might require a Nest Aware subscription.

So, about that expanded support for the first-gen Nest Cam Outdoor. What’s that mean? Well, users can now access their Nest Cam Outdoor footage directly within the Google Home app. No more switching between apps – neat, right? Plus, the new camera history experience in the Google Home app makes it a breeze to find the footage that matters to you. Think event list and timeline views.

Next up, the ability to create and download custom clips from your Nest Cam footage. How does it work? Just trim an existing event video clip by selecting a start time and choosing a clip length. And if you have a Nest Aware Plus subscription and a compatible Nest Cam or Doorbell, you can download custom clips from any part of your video history.

And now, the AI-powered garage door detection. Your Nest Cam can now tell you when you’ve forgotten to close the garage door. It uses image detection to identify whether your garage door is open or closed. If it’s left open, you’ll get a notification in the Google Home app. Just remember, this feature needs a Nest Aware subscription and a Nest Cam.

But wait, there’s more! Google’s also adding event and timeline history to Nest cameras and doorbells viewed in a browser. They’re also working on the ability to download clips on Google Home for web.

And for those who love the holiday season, starting December 1st, Nest doorbell users can enjoy yearly holiday themes. Your visitors will be greeted with a festive chime. All these updates show that Google is really committed to making the Google Home app the best place to set up and control your smart home.
