Full Story

Google Meet’s first major update in 2024 has arrived. It’s bringing a slew of enhancements to a specific viewing experience that was unveiled last year: ultra-low latency live streaming.

This feature was specifically designed for video meetings streamed within an organization. Now, it’s getting several improvements to boost the overall experience.

The official changelog reveals some exciting stuff. One biggie is that meeting hosts can now add or start live streaming from any ongoing Meet call. And it doesn’t matter if it wasn’t initially planned to be live streamed.

Google’s also saying that after this update, video feeds should kick off faster when joining live streams with large audiences. But here’s the kicker: finally, you can view live streams from the Google Meet mobile app on Android and iOS devices.

There’s another neat improvement that comes with this update. You can now see the size of the audience (including both call participants and viewers) in the top left live stream indicator.

And don’t forget about the join screen. It’s been given a makeover to include a quick-access button. This lets meeting participants join a live stream instead of a regular call if they’re feelin’ it.

Google’s letting us know that these changes are now rolling out to Android and iOS users. And by January 18, 2024, all the improvements included in the update should be up and running for Google Meet users. So, keep an eye out!
