Full Story

The age of physical SIM cards is on the decline. Digital eSIMs are taking the lead, a shift significantly driven by the iPhone 14 series. It’s worth noting that the SIM card slot has been removed from the US models of this series.

Google seems to be preparing for this change, too. Reports suggest that the tech giant is planning to introduce an in-built eSIM conversion tool for Pixel phones. This information was found in the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3 update, according to 9to5Google.

The update to the SIM Manager app includes several references to the success or failure of converting to an eSIM. It seems Google’s main aim is to make the conversion from a physical SIM card to an eSIM easier during the setup of a new phone. The only other conversion-related mentions in this app are about the newly launched ability to transfer an eSIM from one Pixel phone to another.

On devices with the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3 update, a new “Convert to eSIM” option has appeared. This can be found in the Settings app under Network & Internet > SIMs > (your carrier). However, tapping this option doesn’t trigger any immediate actions as of now.

At present, most Android phones still have their SIM card slots. But, over time, carriers and phone manufacturers are likely to actively promote the use of eSIMs over physical cards. This shift towards eSIMs could help reduce future e-waste and make the process of changing carriers easier.

eSIMs can be integrated with a variety of devices, including smartwatches, tablets, and IoT devices. This creates a connected ecosystem, making it easier to manage multiple devices. Users can switch between devices without the need for traditional SIM card swaps.

The versatility of eSIMs not only enhances convenience but also paves the way for a more harmonious and connected tech landscape. In this landscape, devices work together to meet users’ diverse needs.
