Full Story
Google is expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI) by incorporating it into its search feature. The company is rolling out an update that allows users to generate images and written drafts using generative AI-powered Search experience (SGE). This new feature aims to enhance the search experience by helping users find the perfect image they have in mind. For example, if you’re searching for a picture of a capybara wearing a chef’s hat and cooking breakfast, SGE can generate up to four images that match your query, complete with descriptive details.
Google is taking precautions to ensure responsible use of this technology by implementing safeguards to block the creation of images that violate its prohibited use policy. Each image generated through SGE will also have metadata labeling and embedded watermarking to indicate that it is AI-created. This move aligns with the efforts of other platforms like TikTok and Meta, which have started labeling AI-generated content to help users identify it.
In addition to image generation, Google is also introducing written drafts in SGE. This feature will be particularly useful for users conducting research or seeking writing ideas and inspiration. With SGE, users can make their drafts shorter or adjust the tone to be more casual.
Furthermore, Google is working on a tool called “About this Image” to provide users with additional context and credibility assessment for images. This tool will display information such as when a similar version of an image was first seen by Google or other web pages that use the same image, including news or fact-checking sites.
Currently, the image generation capability of SGE is only available in English in the United States for users over 18 who have opted into the experiment. However, these updates demonstrate Google’s commitment to leveraging AI technology to enhance the search experience and provide users with more accurate and helpful results.
