Full Story

Apple’s third developer beta for iOS 17.2 includes a new toggle for the virtual QWERTY keyboard, which can be disabled separately from predictive text. This feature is a part of the keyboard on iPhone and iPad which provides word, emoji, and information suggestions while typing. However, if you accept a word suggested by the QWERTY, a space is left at the end of that word and is deleted if you add a punctuation mark.

iOS 17, Apple added inline text predictions which completes a word or a phrase you are typing before you finish it. A new toggle has been added to the Keyboards settings in the latest iOS 17.2 beta build that says, “Show Predictions Inline.” This allows users to disable inline text predictions while keeping the predictive text at the top of the QWERTY keyboard. In iOS 17.2 beta 3, users can now turn off inline text predictions separately by going to Settings > General > Keyboard and toggling off “Show Predictions Inline.”

Disabling predictive text will bring back the old correction method where corrections appeared automatically in a white “bullet” above the incorrect spelling of a word. The ability to separate inline text predictions from predictive text provides more flexibility to iPhone and iPad users who prefer the previous correction method. This latest feature is a welcome addition for those who found inline text predictions to be intrusive while typing.
