In 2007, the original iPhone released with EDGE data speeds instead of 3G, causing slower data speeds and detailed YouTube videos only accessible through Wi-Fi. The iPhone saw significant changes in 2008 with the release of the iPhone 3GS. This year’s iPhone 15 line dominates the list of fastest phones with both 5G downlink and uplink speeds. The iPhone 15 Pro Max measured a 5G downlink speed of 285.02Mbps and uplink speed of 18.26Mbps in the U.S. Likewise, the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro followed closely with their quick 5G speeds. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 was the first non-iOS device to make the list. Apple’s iPhones continue to lead as the fastest 5G phones in 12 countries outside of the U.S.

The list of fastest phones abroad includes countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Philippines, South Korea, Spain, U.A.E., U.K., and Vietnam. According to Ookla, “We’re excited by the number of countries where mobile device performance increased with the new models and even more excited by the countries where performance is so fast that consumers can look to new modes of connectivity. Even if your country didn’t see the speed boosts you were hoping for, don’t hold back on upgrading if you want to treat yourself or a loved one based on any other number of reasons.” Originally, Apple intended to release its homegrown 5G modem chip with this year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max; however, they extended their deal with Qualcomm. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 5G modem chip should be in 2023’s iPhone 16 Pro, as the Apple-Qualcomm deal extends through 2026.
