Full Story

Apple has been hinting at the next generation of CarPlay for years. We’re talking as far back as 2022. They’ve been promising a lot, including a seamless integration between the iPhone and the car. But, since then, it’s been all crickets and tumbleweeds… until now.

Suddenly, we’ve got two luxury car brands stepping up to the plate. Porsche and Aston Martin are the names, and they’re on board with the next-gen CarPlay (hat tip to 9to5Mac). So, if you’ve been saving up for that Porsche for 2024, it’s going to be best buds with your iPhone.

Apple’s calling this next-gen CarPlay the “ultimate iPhone experience for the car”. That’s a big claim. They’re promising it’ll provide content for all the driver’s screens, including the instrument cluster. It’s all about creating a cohesive design experience that’s the best of both your car and your iPhone.

You’ll even be able to control vehicle functions like the radio and temperature straight from CarPlay. And, to make it really yours, there’ll be personalization options from widgets to curated gauge cluster designs.

Michael Mauer, the VP of style at Porsche, had this to say: “We recently brought the My Porsche app to CarPlay to provide drivers with even easier access to car functionality. In the future, we will be adding support for the next generation of CarPlay to Porsche models. We look forward to delivering an experience that adds the personal touch of a driver’s iPhone to the exclusivity of a Porsche.”

But, there’s a bit of a mystery here. There’s no word on which exact Porsche models will be getting the next-gen CarPlay support. Will it be new ones, or existing ones? It’s the same story with Aston Martin. They’ve confirmed their support for the next-gen CarPlay, but haven’t dished any details on which cars will get it.

Adding to the intrigue, Aston Martin wasn’t even on Apple’s original list of automakers that would support next-gen CarPlay. That list included the likes of Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Lincoln, Audi, Volvo, Honda, Porsche, Nissan, Ford, Jaguar, Acura, Polestar, Infiniti, and Renault.
