Full Story

Just over a year back, Motorola launched the Moto G Play (2023). It was a low-spec phone featuring a 6.5-inch HD+ 720x 1600 resolution LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The device was powered by a 12nm MediaTek Helio G37 chip.

It came with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. At the back, there was a 16MP primary camera, a 2MP macro camera for extreme close-ups, and a 2MP depth sensor. It also had a 5MP front-facing camera and a 5000mAh battery.

Fast forward to now, the next iteration, the Moto G Play (2024), is on the horizon. OnLeaks and SMARTmania have created a set of renders for this model. The images show fairly thick bezels (especially the chin), and the UI is unmistakably Motorola.

The primary camera appears to be getting a nice upgrade to a 50MP image sensor. However, it’s the only camera on the back. The macro and ultra-wide sensors are gone, and even the 2MP depth sensor is missing on the new model. The front-facing camera gets a boost and will be backed by an 8MP sensor.

The display remains the same size at 6.5 inches but offers a higher FHD+ (1080p) resolution. It’s still an LCD panel and will still feature a 90Hz refresh rate. The Moto G Play (2024) will keep the predecessor’s 5000mAh battery, but the charging speed will be 15W compared to 10W on the previous model.

The new version replaces the MediaTek Helio chip with an unknown Snapdragon one. It’s still a mystery whether the device will support 5G connectivity. The previous Moto G Play variant had Android 12 installed, and the new version will run on Android 13.

It gets a small bump to 4GB of RAM while storage doubles to 64GB. The rumored U.S. price for the phone is $169, and it could be unveiled as soon as next month. So, keep your eyes peeled!
